Hannah Holman, June 2001

The 2001 Bronx Prize For Musical Pedagogy was awarded to Filipino violinist Joey Corpus for his outstanding achievements in the field of violin teaching. The award was made possible by a generous donation from Margaret Rosen and presented by the City Island Music Society. The award ceremony took place on Sunday, June 17, at the Le Refuge B&B on City Island, NY.

Joey Corpus is known as something of a phenomenon in the music world. In recent years violinists worldwide have been flocking to his Manhattan studio to study with him. He has had an enormous impact in the tri-state musical community and in the lives of many professional musicians.

Mr. Corpus’ students include internationally renowned soloist and best-selling recording artist Lara St. John, international soloist Katharine Gowers, Naumburg, Washington, and Klein International Competition winner Jennifer Frautschi, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (MET) Associate Concertmaster Wen Qian, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Assistant Concertmaster Kyu Young Kim. They have performed as soloists with leading orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the National Symphony, the Tokyo Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London). Other students have established careers in major US symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles and the NY City free-lance scene. His students are graduates of or currently attending schools such as the Curtis Institute, Juilliard, Moscow Conservatory, Eastman, Oberlin, Yale, New England Conservatory, Mannes, Manhattan School of Music, Indiana University, Brussels Conservatory and the Guildhall School of Music (London).

"Joey Corpus has taught me everything I know about actually playing the violin."
Lara St. John

"Joey is able to immediately spot one’s potential, and he encourages and enables one to reach it through entirely practical, tangible means. I have never before seen this kind of teaching."
Robert Norman, Concertmaster of the London Baroque Ensemble (UK)

"Joey is a miracle to me. He has helped me find the freedom to be able to play in such a way that previously I’d only dreamed possible."
Louise Owen, Assistant Concertmaster of the hit Broadway musical, THE PRODUCERS

"Joey has an incredible understanding of all aspects of the violin and a gift for seeing exactly where the root of a problem lies, analysing it and then finding a remedy. He treats you as an individual and makes you feel he really cares about your progress. This, coupled with his warmth, humour and patience, makes the process of solving difficulties fun and rewarding. He is a truly inspiring teacher."
Katharine Gowers

"Joey is a profound musician with a keen, methodical mind. He never ceases to amaze me. He is, quite simply, the best."
Amedee Williams, violist, published author and president of the William Lincer Foundation.
